Coverage Notes
Important information about Rakuten Mobile's network
Rakuten Network Areas: Major metropolitan areas including Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sendai, Hiroshima, and Sapporo have excellent 4G/5G coverage with Rakuten's own infrastructure.
5G Network Expansion: 5G coverage in the Kanto region (Tokyo area) increased by ≈110% in 2024/25. Other regions saw expansion up to 100%, with Okinawa coverage doubling and Yamaguchi Prefecture expanding ≈40%.
Partner Network: Areas without Rakuten native coverage use au partner network. High-speed data allowance is 5GB per month, with speeds reduced to 1Mbps after exceeding the limit.
Indoor Coverage: Building penetration varies by construction type. Newer buildings and those near cell towers typically have better indoor reception.
5G Technology: 5G Sub-6 GHz provides wide-area coverage with speeds up to 1 Gbps. 5G mmWave (millimeter-wave) is limited to urban zones like major train stations and stadiums, offering even higher speeds but shorter range. 4G LTE coverage serves as fallback in all areas.
Network Infrastructure: Rakuten operates ≈17,500 outdoor 5G base stations across all 47 prefectures (as of Sept 2024), with more than 80% using Massive-MIMO antennas to support high speeds and improved capacity.
700 MHz "Platinum Band": Launched in June 2024, the 700 MHz band improves indoor/underground penetration and helps fill coverage holes. Rakuten plans to expand to 10,661 sites by 2033 as part of its long-term network development roadmap.
Coverage Updates: Network expansion is ongoing with new areas being added monthly. Remote and mountainous regions continue to see coverage improvements as part of Rakuten's 2033 expansion goals.
