Adding a Family Line on Rakuten Mobile: ¥110 Off Every Line

Rakuten Mobile's family discount takes ¥110 off each line in the group. How to add a partner who doesn't read Japanese, a child's line, and referral points.

Three phones on a low wooden table in a bright Japanese living room, a child’s backpack on a cushion

Every line in a Rakuten Mobile family group gets ¥110 a month off, so the 3GB tier drops from ¥1,078 to ¥968 and unlimited drops from ¥3,278 to ¥3,168. That's small per line, but it has no end date, and if the new line comes in through a referral link that person gets their own referral points on top.

Who can join the group

The discount is called 最強家族割 (SAIKYO FAMILY Discount). One person, the representative, creates a group and invites everyone else. A few details from Rakuten's own pages:

  • Up to 20 lines per group, including the representative's.
  • "Family" is loose. Since April 10, 2024, relatives, same-sex partners and common-law partners all qualify. Rakuten doesn't ask for documents proving the relationship.
  • The discount has no time limit.
  • It's a flat ¥110 from the month someone joins. Since the February 2025 billing period, joining mid-month no longer gets prorated.
  • Contract fees are ¥0 for up to 4 lines under the same name, counted cumulatively since April 2020. The 5th line onward costs ¥3,850 each. That matters if you plan to put several lines in your own name.

Adding a partner who doesn't read Japanese

Rakuten's family page asks for each referred family member to apply in the name of the person who'll actually use the line, one line per person. So your partner applies with their own Rakuten ID, not as an extra line on your account.

The part that trips people up is where the group lives. The standalone my Rakuten Mobile app is being retired (August 2026 was the scheduled end), and creating groups on the web version has ended. Everything now happens inside the Rakuten Link app, which needs Android 10+ or iOS 16+.

The steps are short:

  1. Your partner signs up and their line goes live.
  2. You (the representative) open my Rakuten Mobile inside Rakuten Link, go to the data and fees tab, and create the family group.
  3. You send them the invite link.
  4. They tap it, pick their phone number, and accept.

If the invite link has stopped working, reissue it from the same screen. I'd do step 4 sitting next to them. They have to choose which phone number joins the group, and on a dual-SIM phone it's easy to pick the wrong one.

Adding a child's line

Kids get a second discount that stacks with the family one. 最強こども割 (SAIKYO KIDS Discount) takes ¥440 off while the line stays under 3GB, and ¥110 off above that. With both discounts, a child's 3GB line is ¥528 a month.

The conditions:

  • It runs until the month before the child's 13th birthday month.
  • The contract has to be in the child's name, and the line needs Rakuten Link.
  • You apply for it separately after signing up.
  • For anyone under 18, a filtering service is mandatory (あんしんコントロール, ¥550 a month, currently free for the first 3 months), unless a parent submits a form declining it.

Under-18 contract holders can be invited into a family group, so the child's line gets the ¥110 too.

Referral points count per line

The referral reward isn't a one-per-family thing. Each new line that goes through the link and meets the conditions earns its own points, up to 5 lines per person: 14,000 points for an MNP transfer, 13,000 for a new sign-up. Your partner logs in with their Rakuten ID through the link before applying, makes a 10-second call from Rakuten Link once the line is active, and finishes all of it by the end of the month after next. Details are on the referral page.

One catch: anyone already on Rakuten Mobile can't be referred. Only first-time sign-ups count.

Who this isn't for

If your household is on a big-three family plan bundled with home internet, ¥110 per line on its own isn't a reason to move. Run each person's usage through the plan finder first. And if someone in the family can't or won't use Rakuten Link, both the free calls and the kids discount stop working for them.
