ahamo Cancellation Fee: ¥1,100 Rule and Switching to Rakuten

ahamo charges ¥1,100 only if you leave within 365 days of a contract made on or after July 1, 2025. Porting out is free. Here's how the switch to Rakuten works.

ahamo's only exit fee is a ¥1,100 contract cancellation charge, and it only applies if your line was opened on or after July 1, 2025 and you leave within 365 days of the contract date, porting out included. After that first year you can leave for nothing, and moving your number out costs ¥0.

How the ¥1,100 rule works

ahamo's cancellation page lists the same ¥1,100 fee whether you simply cancel or port your number to another carrier with MNP. The 365 days count from the day your contract was made, so open the ahamo app and check that date before you do anything. If you're at day 340, waiting three weeks saves you ¥1,100.

Two edge cases:

  • Lines opened March 1 to June 30, 2025 are only charged ¥1,100 inside the first year if docomo decides the line wasn't used normally: there's no real usage on it, or another line in your name was cancelled within its own first year during the past 365 days.
  • Cancelling within 8 days under ahamo's 8-day cancellation rule isn't charged the fee.

docomo also notes that a separate fee can apply if you have an older discount with a fixed term attached. Most ahamo users won't, but it's worth a look in the app.

What it's worth to switch

The plan prices do most of the talking. ahamo is ¥2,970 a month for 30GB. Rakuten Mobile's SAIKYO Plan is ¥1,078 up to 3GB, ¥2,178 up to 20GB and ¥3,278 for unlimited data. If you use under 3GB, you save ¥1,892 every month, which covers even the ¥1,100 fee in the first month.

What the switch takes

You don't need an MNP reservation number. Rakuten lists ahamo as a supported carrier for MNP One-Stop, and ahamo's own page confirms it supports the one-stop method. The flow on Rakuten's side:

  1. Get ready: ID document, your Rakuten ID and password, and a credit card or bank account. The name on your ahamo contract has to match the one on your Rakuten application. Check your phone is on Rakuten's supported-device list.
  2. Apply online and pick "transfer from another carrier (MNP)" at the phone number step.
  3. In my Rakuten Mobile, open your application history, choose to request the number transfer, and select ahamo. You'll be sent to ahamo's own page to approve it, logging in with your ahamo account.
  4. When the SIM arrives (or straight away with eSIM), tap the button to start the MNP transfer. Requests between 9:00 and 21:00 complete the same day. After 21:00, it goes through from 9:00 the next morning.

Your ahamo contract ends when the transfer to Rakuten completes. One-stop isn't available if you apply in a Rakuten shop or already hold a reservation number. In that case you'll use the reservation-number route, and a web application needs at least 7 days left on the number.

Check these before you leave ahamo

  • Phone instalments. Any remaining balance keeps being billed after you leave. You can also pay it off in one go.
  • d points. They stay with your d account, so you keep using them as a d POINT CLUB member after cancelling. Don't delete the d account.
  • @docomo.ne.jp email. If you're paying ¥330 a month for docomo mail portability, the address carries on after you leave. If you never signed up for it, an ahamo line has no docomo address to lose.
  • Loyalty. Your continuous-use period with docomo resets, and some content or e-money may not transfer.

When to switch

ahamo doesn't prorate. The month you leave costs the full monthly fee whatever the date, so leaving on the 3rd saves nothing over leaving on the 28th. Late in the month means you've at least used what you paid for.

There's also a price change coming. From December 1, 2026, ahamo moves to tiered pricing from 40GB for ¥3,135 up to 120GB for ¥5,115, and the ahamo Oomori add-on ends on November 30. If you were already thinking of leaving, doing it in November means you never see the new bill.

Who this isn't for

If you travel abroad often and use a lot of data there, stay with ahamo: it lets you use your full 30GB overseas, and Rakuten includes 2GB. And if you regularly use 30GB at home, ahamo at ¥2,970 is cheaper than Rakuten's ¥3,278 unlimited tier.
